Ed Markey, Massachusetts Congressman, Announces Run For John Kerry Seat In Special Election

Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is running for the seat expected to be vacated by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) upon his confirmation as secretary of state, the Boston Globe reports Thursday.

"I have decided to run for the U.S. Senate because this fight is too important," Markey said in a statement to the Globe. ?There is so much at stake."

Markey is the first major candidate to announce a run, while Reps. Mike Capuano (D-Mass.) and Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) have also signaled interest in running. Defeated Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) has not said what he will do, but would be a strong candidate in a special election given his personal popularity.

Markey, 66, is the longest-serving congressman in the state's delegation, having been elected to the House of Representatives in 1976. He represents suburbs north and west of Boston. He ran for Senate in 1984 and withdrew from the race, and considered a run after the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.).

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) said he will in all likelihood appoint a caretaker to the seat to take Kerry's place, while a special election would probably occur in early in June.

Markey's office did not return a request for comment Thursday.

PST: Rooney out up to three weeks with knee injury

Put away those Jump to Conclusions Mats, Manchester United fans. And tear up those tin foil hats while you?re at it. By and large, Wayne Rooney is fine despite missing today?s carnival against Newcastle. Though that doesn?t mean he?s fully fit, either.

After Wednesday?s 4-3 win over the visiting Magpies, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson divulged Rooney suffered a knee injury while hitting a volley at the end of Tuesday practice.?The result, per Ferguson, is Rooney suffering ?strained?a ligament behind the knee.

?It?s unfortunate, and he could be out for two to three weeks.?

It?s the type of injury which would be suspicious were it suffered right before an international break. Since the next FIFA date isn?t for a month and a half, we can table our cynicism. This knock seems legit.

However, if you have to pick a time for a player to miss three weeks, this is as good a stretch as any. Though the Red Devils made a meal of it, Newcastle at home is not a tough match. Coming up, the league leaders will get West Brom, Wigan, West Ham, and Liverpool. That certainly could be worse.

While Manchester United is destined to find the most difficult way to approach each match, they?ll also have a chance to learn how to play without Rooney. Particularly in the midfield (where Rooney?s tendency to drop help augments United?s weaknesses), the Red Devil midfielders could do to stand out their own two feet.

Michael Carrick has been quietly great in a regista-esque role, but everything between him and Rooney has been a sinkhole. Ferguson needs somebody to step up.

Three weeks without Rooney will give somebody that chance. Ideally, that player is Tom Cleverley, already the person Ferguson?s turning to in big matches. But it could be Anderson, Darren Fletcher, or Paul Scholes.

Heading into the Jan. 13 North West derby (which Rooney?s unlikely to miss), a series of players have a chance to show they can help offset Liverpool?s three-man middle. Now?s the time to step up.

WASHINGTON, DC December 26, 2012 -- Scientists have sequenced the genome of the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, an advancement that could help identify new targets for drugs to treat and prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia, a common and often deadly infection in immunocompromised patients. The study will be published on December 26, 2012 in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. The organism cannot yet be isolated and grown for study in the laboratory, so details about Pneumocystis pneumonia, the biology of P. jirovecii, and its pathogenicity are hard to come by. The genome sequence represents a wealth of new information for doctors and researchers tackling this disease.

Pneumocystis pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that strikes most often in individuals with diminished immune systems. The corresponding author of the study in mBio, Philippe Hauser of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and University of Lausanne, in Switzerland, says the disease gained importance in the 1980s.

"Recognized first among malnourished infants, P. jirovecii pneumonia became a public issue with the advent of the HIV epidemic," says Hauser. Today, the disease most commonly affects HIV-infected persons who are unaware of their status as well as solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hemato-oncologic or autoimmune diseases. Since the organism cannot be grown in the lab for study, researchers have long made do with studying P. jirovecii's lab-friendly relatives, species that infect animals and plants, in order to explore the secrets of the human disease.

"It is obviously better to study [P. jirovecii's] genes rather that those of Pneumocystis species from animal models. The genome has both medical and evolutionary interests for the scientific community," says Hauser.

Under normal circumstances, scientists sequencing the genome of a microorganism simply extract DNA from thick cultures of cells they grow in the lab. Since they were unable to grow P. jirovecii cells for their genomic DNA, Hauser and his colleagues took a different approach. They took a sample of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from an individual infected with Pneumocystis pneumonia, then concentrated the P. jirovecii cells using immuno-precipitation and created copies of the DNA in the sample using a technique called random DNA amplification. This mixture of DNA strands, from P. jirovecii, human, and other microbes from the lungs of the infected patient, was then sequenced using high throughput technologies.

According to Hauser and his colleagues, the fact that the sequence data represented DNA from many different species created the biggest challenge they faced. "The major challenge of the study was the in silico sorting of the reads out of a mixture representing the human host and different organisms present in the lung microbiome," he says. This challenge was met through a collaboration with Marco Pagni of the Vital-IT group of the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, who provided indispensable expertise and infrastructure.

Once the sorting task was accomplished, the researchers assembled the sequences into a genome and attempted to identify the functions of P. jirovecii's genes. This is the first time scientists have assembled the genome of a fungus from a mixed pool of DNA from a single source, often called a metagenome. Their analyses reveal a surprising fact: P. jirovecii is a parasite that must live within the human body to survive.

P. jirovecii lacks the genes necessary for creating some of the essential ingredients of life, a hallmark of obligate parasites, organisms that must rely on another creature for sustenance. "It implies that they need their host to provide these molecules. Thus, this has been quite an important finding which implied that human beings represent the reservoir of this pathogen," says Hauser. This is useful information, since it means that people are the only significant source of the organism and that both infected people and healthy carriers represent the only control points for limiting the spread of the disease.

The genome also shows that P. jirovecii apparently lacks the ability to make toxins and virulence factors, molecules that enable a microbe to invade and take advantage of its host. This makes sense, since P. jirovecii does not cause disease in healthy people, but only runs out of control when it is not confronted with an immune response.

In the study of infectious disease, access to the genome of a pathogen provides new information that can be pivotal in combating the diseases is causes. The hope is that the genome of P. jirovecii will lead to new advances in therapies for those suffering from Pneumocystis pneumonia. The current drugs of choice for treating Pneumocystis pneumonia are antifolates, but certain isolates of P. jirovecii have already developed resistance to antifolates, an ability that is very likely to spread. Now that the genome of P. jirovecii is assembled and available to researchers all over the world, scientists can tease out clues about the organism that will help identify targets for some badly needed new drugs.

Gadgets used for education | ArticleBro.com

In today?s Information age, the human life has become so much high-tech that we feel it as an eminent part and parcel of our life. The education system is no different. Science and technology has given tremendous boost to the education sector, worldwide. Gone are the days when notebook only meant for paper bind booklet, now notebooks refers to smaller versions of laptop. Indeed the electronic gadgets have started making their strong presence, especially in education sector.

Some of the gadgets used in education today are described below-

1. Computers: The index for human literacy in the current scenario is acknowledged to be the ?knowledge of computers?. They have thoroughly changed the face of education. A person without the knowledge of computers is as good as an illiterate in the present scenario. They laid the basis of information age when they were introduced to the general public, few decades ago. Realizing this fact, people in Europe have started pursuing the A Level Courseswith great zeal. In every classroom there exists a computer. Many students pursue online educational courses with the help of these computers.

2. Mobile Phones: I am quite sure that Graham Bell would have had never imagined that people would get educated due to his invention. The mobiles phone today, are not just used to communicate with each other. Smart phones are in now. People learn on the move. They pursue their online courses while moving. The mobile phones have certainly made education system portable. The smart phones with specific configurations are used to view educational videos, slides and presentations. Not just that it also allows students to discuss with each other on educational topics. And this happens on the move.

3. Tablets: Tablets are a step ahead of mobile phones in terms of online education. Being bigger in size it provides a better interface for the e-learners. The high quality graphics of the tablets overcome the drawback of mobile phones. They are portable and compact too and hence are considered as the best gadgets to pursue online training. Although one can?t compare it with mobile phones yet they have an edge over the later, at least in terms of online education. With its price coming down steeply they will be a great boon for e-learners.

4. Laptops: Laptops are currently, very widely used as educational gadget. Most of the students in
A Level Training?and in further education carry a laptop. One can?t carry computers along with him, this reason led to the invention of laptops. Laptops are used in education in abundance these days because they are much powerful than computers and much portable too.

5. Projectors: Gone are the days when students would learn in classrooms over the blackboards. The white boards are seen in every class these days. These white boards are used for the projectors which are attached with one of the above mentioned gadgets. These projectors enlarge the graphics of an image, video, presentations etc. and make the classroom learning interesting and effective. Truly the education system of today, has become high-tech.

About Author::I am a teacher by professional and a writer by passion. I mentor students pursuing AS Level Courses, and hence have a decent knowledge around Accounting and bookkeeping. To produce good quality write ups I write accounting issues,A Level Online, job prospects in accounting etc.

Four planets in 'habitable zones' spotted within spitting distance of Earth

Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / December 19, 2012

This diagram shows an artist's rendering comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The 'habitable zone' is a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.

Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.

The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.

The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.

Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.

Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.

The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.

Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.

The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?

A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

Pro-gun rights petition U.S. to deport CNN's Piers Morgan

LONDON (AP) ? Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling for British CNN host Piers Morgan to be deported from the U.S. over his gun control views.

Morgan has taken an aggressive stand for tighter U.S. gun laws in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting. Last week, he called a gun advocate appearing on his "Piers Morgan Tonight" show an "unbelievably stupid man."

Now, gun rights activists are fighting back. A petition created Dec. 21 on the White House e-petition website by a user in Texas accuses Morgan of engaging in a "hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution" by targeting the Second Amendment. It demands he be deported immediately for "exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens."

The petition has already hit the 25,000 signature threshold to get a White House response. By Monday, it had 31,813 signatures.

Morgan seemed unfazed ? and even amused ? by the movement.

In a series of Twitter messages, he alternately urged his followers to sign the petition and in response to one article about the petition said "bring it on" as he appeared to track the petition's progress.

"If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?" he wrote.

AP: 'Odd Couple,' 'Quincy' star Jack Klugman dies

Nina Prommer / EPA file

Jack Klugman in Santa Monica, Calif., in June 2008.

By Anthony McCartney, The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Jack Klugman, the prolific, craggy-faced character actor and regular guy who was loved by millions as the messy one in TV's "The Odd Couple" and the crime-fighting coroner in "Quincy, M.E.," died Monday, a son told the Associated Press. He was 90.

Klugman, who lost his voice to throat cancer in the 1980s and trained himself to speak again, died with his wife at his side.

"He had a great life and he enjoyed every moment of it and he would encourage others to do the same," son Adam Klugman said.

Adam Klugman said he was spending Christmas with his brother, David, and their families. Their father had been convalescing for some time but had apparently died suddenly and they were not sure of the exact cause.

"His sons loved him very much," David Klugman said. "We'll carry on in his spirit."

Never anyone's idea of a matinee idol, Klugman remained a popular star for decades simply by playing the type of man you could imagine running into at a bar or riding on a subway with?-- gruff, but down to earth, his tie stained and a little loose, a racing form under his arm, a cigar in hand during the days when smoking was permitted.

The Odd Couple TV series intro.

His was a city actor ideal for "The Odd Couple," which ran from 1970 to 1975 and was based on Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, divorced New Yorkers who end up living together. The show teamed Klugman?-- the sloppy sports writer Oscar Madison -- and Tony Randall?-- the fussy photographer Felix Unger -- in the roles played by Walter Matthau and Art Carney on Broadway and Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the 1968 film. Klugman had already had a taste of the show when he replaced Matthau on Broadway and he learned to roll with the quick-thinking Randall, with whom he had worked in 1955 on the CBS series "Appointment with Adventure."

"There's nobody better to improvise with than Tony," Klugman said. "A script might say, 'Oscar teaches Felix football.' There would be four blank pages. He would provoke me into reacting to what he did. Mine was the easy part."

Reuters file

Actors Jack Klugman, left, portraying Oscar Madison, and Tony Randall, portraying Felix Unger, in a scene from their 1970's television series "The Odd Couple."

They were battlers on screen, and the best of friends in real life. When Randall died in 2004 at age 84, Klugman told CNN: "A world without Tony Randall is a world that I cannot recognize."

In "Quincy, M.E.," which ran from 1976 to 1983, Klugman played an idealistic, tough-minded medical examiner who tussled with his boss by uncovering evidence of murder in cases where others saw natural causes.

"We had some wonderful writers," he said in a 1987 Associated Press interview. "Quincy was a muckraker, like Upton Sinclair, who wrote about injustices. He was my ideal as a youngster, my author, my hero.

"Everybody said, 'Quincy'll never be a hit.' I said, 'You guys are wrong. He's two heroes in one, a cop and a doctor.' A coroner has power. He can tell the police commissioner to investigate a murder. I saw the opportunity to do what I'd gotten into the theater to do?-- give a message.

"They were going to do cops and robbers with 'Quincy.' I said, 'You promised me I could do causes.' They said, 'Nobody wants to see that.' I said, 'Look at the success of "60 Minutes." They want to see it if you present it as entertainment.'"

For his 1987 role as 81-year-old Nat in the Broadway production of "I'm Not Rappaport," Klugman wore leg weights to learn to shuffle like an elderly man. He said he would wear them for an hour before each performance, "to remember to keep that shuffle."

"The guy is so vital emotionally, but physically he can't be," Klugman said.

"We treat old people so badly. There is nothing easy about 80."

The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in Philadelphia and began his acting career in college drama (Carnegie Institute of Technology). After serving in the Army during World War I, he went on to summer stock and off-Broadway, rooming with fellow actor Charles Bronson as both looked for paying jobs. He made his Broadway debut in 1952 in a revival of "Golden Boy." His film credits included Sidney Lumet's "12 Angry Men" and Blake Edwards' "Days of Wine and Roses" and an early television highlight was appearing with Humphrey Bogart and Henry Fonda in a production of "The Petrified Forest." His performance in the classic 1959 musical "Gypsy" brought him a Tony nomination for best featured (supporting) actor in a musical.

He also appeared in several episodes of "The Twilight Zone," including a memorable 1963 one in which he played a negligent father whose son is seriously wounded in Vietnam. His other TV shows included "The Defenders" and the soap opera "The Greatest Gift."

In a 1987 interview in the New York Daily News, he said, "once I did three hourlong shows in 2? weeks. Think we'd do that now? Huh! But then it was great. I did summer stock, played the classics. Me!"

Throat cancer took away his raspy voice for several years in the 1980s. When he was back on the stage for a 1993 revival of "Three Men on a Horse," The Associated Press review said, "His voice may be a little scratchy but his timing is as impeccable as ever."

"The only really stupid thing I ever did in my life was to start smoking," he said in 1996. Seeing people smoking in television and films, he added, "disgusts me, it makes me so angry?-- kids are watching."

In his later years, he guest-starred on TV series including "Third Watch" and "Crossing Jordan" and appeared in a 2010 theatrical film, "Camera Obscura."

Klugman's hobby was horse racing and he eventually took up raising them, too.

"I always loved to gamble," he said. "I never got close to a horse. Fate dealt me a terrible blow when it gave me a good horse the first time out. I thought how easy this is.

"Now I love being around them."

Klugman's wife, actress-comedian Brett Somers, played his ex-wife, Blanche, in the "Odd Couple" series. The couple, who married in 1953 and had two sons, Adam and David, had been estranged for years at the time of her death in 2007.

In February 2008, at age 85, Klugman married longtime girlfriend Peggy Crosby.

In 1997, Klugman was sued by an ex-girlfriend, Barbara Neugass, who claimed he had promised to support her for the rest of her life. But a jury rejected her claim.

Study shows rapid warming on the West Antarctic ice sheet

Dec. 23, 2012 ? In a discovery that raises further concerns about the future contribution of Antarctica to sea level rise, a new study finds that the western part of the ice sheet is experiencing nearly twice as much warming as previously thought.

The temperature record from Byrd Station, a scientific outpost in the center of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), demonstrates a marked increase of 4.3 degrees Fahrenheit (2.4 degrees Celsius) in average annual temperature since 1958 -- that is, three times faster than the average temperature rise around the globe.

This temperature increase is nearly double what previous research has suggested, and reveals -- for the first time -- warming trends during the summer months of the Southern Hemisphere (December through February), said David Bromwich, professor of geography at Ohio State University and senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Research Center.

The findings were published online this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.

"Our record suggests that continued summer warming in West Antarctica could upset the surface mass balance of the ice sheet, so that the region could make an even bigger contribution to sea level rise than it already does," said Bromwich.

"Even without generating significant mass loss directly, surface melting on the WAIS could contribute to sea level indirectly, by weakening the West Antarctic ice shelves that restrain the region's natural ice flow into the ocean."

Andrew Monaghan, study co-author and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), said that these findings place West Antarctica among the fastest-warming regions on Earth.

"We've already seen enhanced surface melting contribute to the breakup of the Antarctic's Larsen B Ice Shelf, where glaciers at the edge discharged massive sections of ice into the ocean that contributed to sea level rise," Monaghan said. "The stakes would be much higher if a similar event occurred to an ice shelf restraining one of the enormous WAIS glaciers."

Researchers consider the WAIS especially sensitive to climate change, explained Ohio State University doctoral student Julien Nicolas. Since the base of the ice sheet rests below sea level, it is vulnerable to direct contact with warm ocean water. Its melting currently contributes 0.3 mm to sea level rise each year -- second to Greenland, whose contribution to sea level rise has been estimated as high as 0.7 mm per year.

Due to its location some 700 miles from the South Pole and near the center of the WAIS, Byrd Station is an important indicator of climate change throughout the region.

In the past, researchers haven't been able to make much use of the Byrd Station measurements because the data was incomplete; nearly one third of the temperature observations were missing for the time period of the study. Since its establishment in 1957, the station hasn't always been occupied. A year-round automated station was installed in 1980, but it has experienced frequent power outages, especially during the long polar night, when its solar panels can't recharge.

Bromwich and two of his graduate students, along with colleagues from NCAR and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, corrected the past Byrd temperature measurements and used corrected data from a computer atmospheric model and a numerical analysis method to fill in the missing observations.

Aside from offering a more complete picture of warming in West Antarctica, the study suggests that if this warming trend continues, melting will become more extensive in the region in the future, Bromwich said.

While the researchers work to fully understand the cause of the summer warming at Byrd Station, the next step is clear, he added.

"West Antarctica is one of the most rapidly changing regions on Earth, but it is also one of the least known," he said. "Our study underscores the need for a reliable network of meteorological observations throughout West Antarctica, so that we can know what is happening -- and why -- with more certainty."

This research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

(AP) ? Tiny hobbit Bilbo Baggins is running circles around some of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" took in $36.7 million to remain No. 1 at the box office for the second-straight weekend, easily beating a rush of top-name holiday newcomers.

Part one of Jackson's prelude to his "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the Warner Bros. release raised its domestic total to $149.9 million after 10 days. The film added $91 million overseas to bring its international total to $284 million and its worldwide haul to $434 million.

"The Hobbit" took a steep 57 percent drop from its domestic $84.6 million opening weekend, but business was soft in general as many people skipped movies in favor of last-minute Christmas preparations.

"The real winner this weekend might be holiday shopping," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Tom Cruise's action thriller "Jack Reacher" debuted in second-place with a modest $15.6 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. Based on the Lee Child best-seller "One Shot," the Paramount Pictures release stars Cruise as a lone-wolf ex-military investigator tracking a sniper conspiracy.

Opening at No. 3 with $12 million was Judd Apatow's marital comedy "This Is 40," a Universal Pictures film featuring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles from the director's 2007 hit "Knocked Up."

Paramount's road-trip romp "The Guilt Trip," featuring "Knocked Up" star Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand, debuted weakly at No. 6 with $5.4 million over the weekend and $7.4 million since it opened Wednesday. Playing in narrower release, Paramount's acrobatic fantasy "Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away" debuted at No. 11 with $2.1 million.

A 3-D version of Disney's 2001 animated blockbuster "Monsters, Inc." also had a modest start at No. 7 with $5 million over the weekend and $6.5 million since opening Wednesday.

Domestic business was off for the first time in nearly two months. Overall revenues totaled $112 million, down 12.6 percent from the same weekend last year, when Cruise's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" debuted with $29.6 million, according to Hollywood.com.

Cruise's "Jack Reacher" opened at barely half the level as "Ghost Protocol," but with a $60 million budget, the new flick cost about $100 million less to make.

Starting on Christmas, Hollywood expects a big week of movie-going with schools out through New Year's Day and many adults taking time off. So Paramount and other studios are counting on strong business for films that started slowly this weekend.

"'Jack Reacher' will end up in a very good place. The movie will be profitable for Paramount," said Don Harris, the studio's head of distribution. "The first time I saw the movie I saw dollar signs. It certainly wasn't intended to be compared to a 'Mission: Impossible,' though."

Likewise, Warner Bros. is looking for steady crowds for "The Hobbit" over the next week, despite the debut of two huge newcomers ? the musical "Les Miserables" and the action movie "Django Unchained" ? on Christmas Day.

"We haven't reached the key holiday play time yet," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner. "It explodes on Tuesday and goes right through the end of the year."

In limited release, Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden manhunt saga "Zero Dark Thirty" played to packed houses with $410,000 in just five theaters, averaging a huge $82,000 a cinema.

That compares to a $4,654 average in 3,352 theaters for "Jack Reacher" and a $4,130 average in 2,913 cinemas for "This Is 40." ''The Guilt Trip" averaged $2,217 in 2,431 locations, and "Monsters, Inc." averaged $1,925 in 2,618 cinemas. Playing just one matinee and one evening show a day at 840 theaters, "Cirque du Soleil" averaged $2,542.

Since opening Wednesday, "Zero Dark Thirty" has taken in $639,000. Distributor Sony plans to expand the acclaimed film to nationwide release Jan. 11, amid film honors and nominations leading up to the Feb. 24 Academy Awards.

Opening in 15 theaters from Lionsgate banner Summit Entertainment, Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor's tsunami-survival drama "The Impossible" took in $138,750 for an average of $9,250.

A fourth new release from Paramount, "The Sopranos" creator David Chase's 1960s rock 'n' roll tale "Not Fade Away," debuted with $19,000 in three theaters, averaging $6,333.

Universal's "Les Miserables" got a head-start on its domestic release with a $4.2 million debut in Japan.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," $36.7 million ($91 million international).

2. "Jack Reacher," $15.6 million ($2.5 million international).

3. "This Is 40," $12 million.

Want To Improve Your Home? Take A Look At These Ideas! |

When your home is looking drab, all you need to do is follow some of the tips from this site to begin making your home look great today. The following is designed to provide you with hundreds of home improvement tips so that you can get your home in working order.

Increase your productivity when installing new kitchen cabinets by planning the order in which you will hang them. Install the top cabinets first so you do not have to lean over the base cabinets to attach them to the wall. Beginning in a corner is the easiest way to avoid fitting problems.

Making sure that your basement is weatherproof is the first step to creating a living space in there. If your basement is dry and never leaks or floods, it is a great way to save money on your renovation. However, if your basement is perennially flooded or damp, it not only makes way for mold, but also makes the space uninhabitable. Make sure to weatherproof your basement before beginning your remodeling project.

A full remodel of your kitchen and counter tops can be very expensive. For a more affordable update, consider having your counter tops refinished by a local contractor. This is also an option for anyone who wants to change the look and feel of their kitchen but cannot afford to completely replace cabinetry.

Before beginning home improvements apply for the appropriate building permits. Any home improvement that involves plumbing, electricity, or structural changes can require a permit. Check your local laws. If you proceed without a permit then you can be fined or it could make the house harder to sell in the future.

For a unique look in the kitchen, plus extra counter space, consider converting an old dresser into an island. The drawers make excellent storage for utensils and tools, and the top can be covered with granite, marble, butcher block or laminate, to match or coordinate with your existing counter tops. Add casters to the legs for a mobile work space that can tuck against a wall if needed.

Do you have home improvement projects that are beyond your skill level or that require more time than you have available? Your best solution might be to try a reputable handyman service. Ask them for references to see if they provide the standard of work that you need. They are usually a more cost-effective solution than hiring a contractor for the job.

When making renovations on your home, you should make sure you hire a contractor you trust. In order for the employee and contractor to both feel satisfied, they should have a certain level of understanding and trust with one another. If that level of trust and understanding is not there, then it is very likely that one or both of you will be unhappy about the results.

If you browse through the tips from this site, you are sure to find a tip that can bring your home to a whole new level of beauty. If you apply some of these tips today, your home will be on its way to truly being improved.

Loan types, Small Business Info

broker19160449.jpg
Here?s what you should know:
1. There are fewer small business loans being awarded these days.
2. Most lenders specialize in certain loan types.
3. Not all business loans are going to be right for your business.
4. Interest rates vary based on the loan type and whether or not the loan is secured or unsecured.

Secured and unsecured loans:
1. A secured loan is a loan that is backed by collateral. It offers lower interest rates, and longer term loans.
2. An unsecured loan is based on credit worthiness and financial strength of the company. These are typically short term loans that need to be paid back within a year.

Interest rates:
1. The type of loan you get will impact the amount of interest you will pay.
2. Interest rates vary from about 5% to as much as 35% or more.
3. The cost of the loan depends on the loan type, the loan product, and the terms of the loan.

If you want to benefit your business the most, and get the best loan to help your business succeed, then you need to understand the wide variety of loan products available, and how to increase your chances of getting funding by selecting the loan that fits your business needs best.

The following lists a few of the loan products available to businesses, and the average interest rates they tend to carry.
? SBA loans- 5.8-8.5%
? Accounts receivable factoring loans- 10-15%
? Merchant cash advance- 18-22%
? Start-up loans- 5-7.5%
? Franchise start up loans- 10-30%
? Business acquisitions- 4.75-7.5%
? Line of credit- 5-24%
? Professional loans- 5-10%
? Equipment financing- 8-25%
? Construction financing- 7-8%
? Hard money equity loan- 15-30%
? Working capital loans- 3-7%
? A/R or P.O. Financing- 8-30%
? Peer to peer loans- 6-36%
As you explore your business finance options, you will see that your business may benefit from a certain loan type over another. Take the time to understand which loans are secured and which are unsecured. Which are short term, and which are long term. Determine if a start up loan or a SBA loan is going to be the best option for you to get your business going, if an equipment loan, or a professional loan is going to be the best for your business, etc. Compare the interest rates, the terms of the loan, and more.

Not all lenders offer all loans, taking the time to understand the loans that are available to small businesses, and which is best for you, will help you minimize the list of potential lenders, and choose one that may be able to increase your chances for financing.

Holiday Reading for Financial Advisers: Medicare Tax, LinkedIn ...

As surprising as this may seem, there was more to the business news cycle over the past few days than all the to-ing and fro-ing over the fiscal cliff. Here are some of the articles I found interesting ? and sometimes offbeat ? in case you missed them:

Taxes

Practice Management

  • If you have read some of my earlier roundups. you probably know I?m a regular reader of the Corner Office column in the Sunday Business section of the New York Times. From time to time, something really stands out. That was the case when I read ?What?s Your Story? The Answer May Land You a Job,? with Karl Heiselman, chief executive of Wolff Olins, an international brand consulting firm. When asked about the culture he is trying to create at his company, Heiselman said: ?We?re a creative company, and when you make stuff, you have to be in the right state. If you?re panicked or stressed out or you don?t feel valuable, then you?ll produce bad work. If you feel confident and supported and pushed and motivated and the rest of it, then you?re going to do great work.? (Emphasis is mine.) Of course, this doesn?t just apply to the culture at creative companies and is just as relevant at wealth management firms. It?s so simple, and yet so often underestimated or overlooked. (New York Times)
  • I also liked what Heiselman had to say about how he hires and what skills he looks for: ?The most important thing is whether I want to hang out and talk with the person. It?s not a likability contest as much as it?s about chemistry. The first thing I always ask is, ?What?s your story?? The way somebody answers that is a pretty good indication of what they?re all about.? Think about that for a minute: How would you describe your story and what would it say about you? (New York Times)
  • In his inimitable way, Josh Brown shares seven suggestions to make 2013 your most productive year ever. Number seven is ?Read More Books.? It?s hard to argue with that; reading more is always on my to-do list. (The Reformed Broker)
  • Brown?s exhortation to read more reminded me of a blog post from August, ?For Those Who Want to Lead, Read.? As the author, John Coleman, points out, ?business people seem to be reading less ? particularly material unrelated to business. But deep, broad reading habits are often a defining characteristic of our greatest leaders and can catalyze insight, innovation, empathy, and personal effectiveness?. (Harvard Business Review)
  • Sticking with reading, I recently started Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power, which won the FT/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award for its ?enjoyable and compelling business insights.? What drew me to it?? aside from oil and geopolitics?? was an interview with the book?s Pulitzer Prize-winning author Steve Coll following the awards. Coll describes ExxonMobil as ?very closed, very much a black box? with an ?unusual? culture. He adds that it is a ?very successful operating company? with ?a very disciplined and very homogeneous corporate culture.? A question for business leaders, he says, is ?whether a unilateral culture of ExxonMobil?s type really works in the world we are in or whether alternative models of collaboration and co-operation are better suited for where we are going.?
  • Again, ?culture? is something every firm should think about. Once I get through Coll?s tome, I?m planning on tackling Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, as I recently watched Lincoln. Also on my list: The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America and Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.

Behavioral Psychology

  • Many of us, apparently, are seduced by data (Hey! It?s been at least 5 seconds since I checked my news stream or my iPhone or TweetDeck). But according to social psychologist Ron Friedman, PhD, too much data disables our decision making. (Psychology Today)

Life

  • Imagine traveling the world for eight years. What lessons would you learn? Well, luckily for you, you won?t have to spend eight years trying to find out as?Benny the Irish Polyglot? has come up with 29 life lessons gleaned from his peripatetic lifestyle. (Fluent in 3 Months)

Iran says seizes explosives on Pakistan border

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has seized 20 bombs and other explosives on its border with Pakistan, a police official was quoted as saying on Saturday.

He called on Islamabad to control its border regions properly.

Iran's impoverished southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, bordering Pakistan, faces serious security problems including bombings and frequent clashes between police and drug dealers and bandits.

"Border agents learned that subversive groups wished to enter our territory," said Ahmad Reza-Radan, Iran's deputy police chief, according to the Mehr news agency.

"The agents were successful in identifying and seizing a large shipment of explosives which had entered our country."

The haul included 20 bombs, Radan said. He did not say when exactly the explosives were found. One person had been arrested in connection but others had escaped to Pakistan.

"We request that the Pakistani government act on its obligations in controlling border regions, because its border has become a way for bandit traffic," he was quoted as saying.

Radan did not identify the arrested person or the suspected groups involved.

In the last major attack in Zahedan, the provincial capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, a suicide bomber killed dozens at a Shiite Muslim mosque in 2010.

That attack was claimed by militant Sunni group Jundollah (God's Soldiers), which accuses Tehran of discriminating against Sunnis. Since 2003 it has claimed a number of other attacks and kidnappings in Iran.

Tehran has linked Jundollah to the Sunni Islamist al Qaeda network and accused the United States of backing Jundollah to create instability in the country, a charge Washington denies.

Iran rejects allegations by Western rights groups that it discriminates against ethnic and religious minorities.

The Elements of Creativity: Attributes Listing Method | Self ...

Attribute listing is one of the best ways to generate ideas, whereby there any many parts to the problem/ challenge faced. If you are asked to generate ideas or solutions to a complex challenge, the first thing you can do is to list all the attributes of your problem.

These may include:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Social
  • and more (depending on the complexity of the challenge)

By doing so, you can then concentrate on each attribute at a time. This will no doubt give you more peace of mind (and pulling of your hairs) when generating your ideas.

The attribute listing technique is often used in a Research & Development (R&D) department of many companies, especially those who are constantly producing innovative products to have an advantage over their competitors.

Let?s go through this worked example to give you a better understanding of how attributes listing can be of help to you.

For example, if your challenge is to design a new ladies? handbag, you could list the attributes as: the physical aspects which include- shape, length, colour, materials used and on the emotional aspects-the stress some women faced of misplacing their handbags. You

might choose to first tackle the emotional stress of losing one?s handbag by creating a new small gadget to be placed within the handbag to sound the owner that she is moving too far away (maybe one or two metre away) from her ?treasure chest?. After that, you could work on the other attributes, one by one, be it the shape or materials used for the handbag.

Putting Your Elements to Work:

Try to generate oodles of ideas using attributes listing with these sets of challenges:

1. Design a new toy for children under 6 years old to teach them simple arithmetic. Safety is an important attribute.

2. Create a campaign to encourage people to stop smoking. (Think through the attributes: Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social)

3. Set up an effective marketing plan (there are many parts to a good marketing plan: the 4 P?s ? Product, Price, Place and Promotion) for your new products.

Have Fun!
